Happy Friday! Look No. 2 is here. If you missed Look No. 1, you can check it out here.
Of all the pieces I chose for the Essential 25 capsule wardrobe, the striped boatneck is probably the most timeless and iconic. It was first introduced as part of the French navy’s uniform in 1858, and Coco Chanel brought it to the fashion world in her Deauville boutique in 1913. By the 1940s and 50s it had made it into the mainstream, further popularized by French women and Hollywood celebrities, such as Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and Grace Kelly.
It’s incredibly versatile and it looks sophisticated yet effortless (my favorite combination). For the OG Breton striped shirt, St. James is the gold standard. So if you’re looking for a true icon, St. James is your brand. I’ve tried many over the years and my favorite is this one from J.Crew. It’s a bit weightier and it washes flawlessly. I’ve had it for years and it still looks brand new. Every time I wear it, women stop me to ask where I purchased it. It’s also slightly shorter than others I’ve tried, which I prefer.
With summer almost upon us, I wanted to give you something fresh and fun for Look #2. As much as I love neutrals, and I keep patterns to a minimum, I love floral prints. Florals on their own are flirty, romantic, and ultra-feminine, which is great for date night or a wedding shower. However, if you’re hoping for a more classic, refined look, stripes are a wonderful way to add some structure and order to the mix. Conversely, if you feel your striped shirt is a bit too serious, adding a floral piece introduces a whimsical element to your overall look. It’s amazing what a difference one piece can make!
Below you’ll find links to each of the pieces above. I tried to keep some of the pieces from the same brands in order to help you meet the free shipping minimums and make returning easier if things don’t work out. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend, and a Happy Mother’s Day to all you mamas out there!
