The Three Essential Elements: Color, Texture & Layers
I don’t know about you, but when my bedroom is a mess I feel anxious … I think it’s because, now that I have a 2-year-old and a 4-month-old, it may be the one place in our home over which I still have some measure of control! I view this as my and Jacob’s space (yes, even though Livi inevitably makes her way into our room sometime between 2-4 am every night … and since I’m breastfeeding, well, Emme basically sleeps in our bed half the night anyhow!). But, I maintain, it’s still my and Jacob’s space! And any space that I designate as “mine” is going to be organized, comfy, and welcoming, otherwise all the clutter I see invariably makes its way in my head. Yes, my space deeply impacts my mood and mindset.
So, I need and an organized, welcoming space … and, being a bedroom, my bed is surely the focal point!
My approach to building a dream-worthy bed is really quite similar to how I build my wardrobe and decorate in general — there are three essential elements I always consider: color, texture, and layers. All three of these elements make for an interesting, sophisticated, and unique outfit or room, and, in this case, bed!

COLOR
First, consider color. It helps to remember that color has a big impact on mood, so choose accordingly. Since we’re designing a dream-worthy bed, keep in mind you want a color scheme that will be pleasing when you wake up to a new day, and when you unwind in the evening. For me, that means pink, and an overall light color palette. But, to add depth and interest, I sprinkled in some grey and charcoal. The best approach is to choose one or two “colors” and add-in a neutral or two (white, cream, beige, etc).
And don’t worry about boxing yourself in with just a few colors — yes, although your “color scheme” should be 2-3 base colors (here, pink, white, and grey) — you can always add in additional pops of color with a new throw pillow or blanket if you get bored, so don’t overthink it too much. You’ll probably see me add pops of purple or gold into the mix here in the future. So, go with a few colors that make you feel good, knowing you can always add in more later!
A few of my favorite combinations include:
- Gold, plum, and soft beige
- Aqua, sapphire, and mint
- Greek blue, soft warm pink, and muted magenta
- Teal, peach, and warm beige
- Pale yellow, cream, and tan

TEXTURE
This is, in my opinion, one of the most important, but most frequently overlooked, elements to consider in fashion and decorating. Truth be told, you could decorate your entire room in a single color, and still create a stunning, unique space by incorporating a variety of textures into your decor. In fact, this is by far one of my favorite looks when it comes to fashion — head-to-toe grey, camel, or cream in a wide range of textures. I’m also all about comfort, so when it comes to bedding I gravitate towards the super-soft and fluffy.
Notice I use a variety of textures here — velvet, embroidery, fur, tassels, rivets, and even sequins (though minimally and as an accent, because lying on sequins isn’t what I would call comfy)!
Texture adds richness and sophistication to any look, so have fun with it!

LAYERS
Ok, this element sort of goes hand-in-hand with texture — it adds interest and detail, which helps make the look all your own — you want a unique space that reflects your personality, not a carbon-copy bedspread & pillow set you buy in a box — that may be easy, but I think it tends to look forced and generic.
Luckily, layers are easy to create. Start with a fluffy comforter, and pretty sheets as your base. It’s important to choose sheets you can showcase because they serve as a light, gauzy layer to complement a thicker comforter (didn’t I say layers and texture go hand-in-hand?) I chose a light warm pink sheet with a subtle raindrop print, which adds some interest and depth but doesn’t overwhelm or take away from the pattern of the comforter. And I LOVE this comforter because it’s checked on one side and striped on the other. For layering, this gives me more bang for my buck — simply fold the top of the comforter down and you get a glimpse of the underside, an alternative pattern that gives the illusion of another layer and additional detail. Now add in a few pillows and a fluffy throw blanket — and bam! Layers in a variety of textures, all in a cohesive color scheme …
And welcome to the bed of your dreams … now go make yours, and let me know how it goes — I’d love to hear from you!
yours, K
