HOW TO MAKE SPECKLED EASTER EGGS

Hello! Easter is right around the corner, and it’s time for eggs, bunnies, flowers, and all things spring. I, for one, have never been a fan of the brightly colored rainbow array of Easter eggs. I much prefer to keep things simple, earthy, a natural. Ok, a touch of whimsical too, hence the gold speckles! And simple is generally easy, and yet beautiful. So, I chose to stick with natural brown eggs and a nice range of Robin egg blues, speckled with dark brown and rose gold craft paint. Read on for the “how to”!

You Will Need:

– 2 dozen hardboiled eggs (1 dozen brown, 1 dozen white)

– Classic Easter egg dye (I used PAAS) – for the blues and greens

– Dark brown and rose gold (or whatever color your choose) craft paint

– Small craft sponges (an old toothbrush works too!)

– A paint palette or other surface you don’t mind covering with paint

Instructions:

– Follow the instructions on the Easter egg dye package for the blue and green dyes. Set aside the brown eggs.

– Once the dyes have fully dissolved dye one egg at a time, varying the time for each in order to get some variety in the depth of color. Set aside to dry.

– After the eggs have dried, set out both the brown eggs and dyed eggs wax paper, and squirt a small amount of brown and gold paint on a palette, spreading it to make a very thin layer. Then take a small sponge and lightly dip it in either the brown or gold and lightly press the sponge around one of the eggs. You’ll need to hold the egg in order to speckle it on all sides. I find this is easiest by holding the egg with my thumb and pointer fingers, with my pointer on the top of the egg and my thumb on the very bottom. Once you’ve added speckles all around the egg, place it on the wax paper to dry.

– Repeat with all eggs, making sure to add some variety with the size of the speckles, and the color. As you can see in the pictures, I made some with only brown speckles, some with only gold speckles, and some with a combination of both.

– Once complete, set aside to fully dry before packing back into a carton and placing in the refrigerator.
