The Bestie Gift Guide

November 15, 2019 By Kristin 1 Comment

Hello! If you haven’t already noticed, Starbucks is serving Peppermint Mocha lattes, Christmas lights and trees are prominently displayed in public squares and shopping centers, and there’s a frosty chill in the air.

Yup, the holiday season is once again upon us, which means it’s time to start thinking about gifting! But before we dive into the good stuff, I think it’s important for me to briefly mention my perspective on gifting. I don’t buy gifts to wow people, or to fill up big boxes and make a statement. I buy quality gifts that I know the recipient will truly enjoy and cherish. Therefore, my focus won’t be on all the black Friday sales or specials that allow you to fill up a cart chock full of “stuff” that most people probably won’t use after a month or two and the initial “wow” factor wears off. I, of course, try to find things on sale and share great deals with you, but my main priority is purpose and quality. So if you’re looking for a gift guide full of sale items or the next big trendy thing, I’m sorry to say I’ll probably disappoint. Sorry. Brutal honesty.

One more quick point — you’ll see when you read through my list below, I actually own many of these items myself, which is why I’m recommending them to you! I put my own hard-earned money towards purchasing them, I’ve tried them, I honestly enjoy them, and I’m guessing your friend will too! I’m not picking random things off a website, I try to (mostly) share what I know.

So, let’s dive in! Today’s gift guide is focused on that amazing friend or neighbor in your life … she’s not blood, but she may as well be … you tell her everything, you share everything, you support and admire each other. You want a gift that pampers her mind, body, and soul. She deserves it.

So here they are… a collection of cozy, thoughtful, and meaningful gifts sure to bring joy to her day.

  1. Fawn Design Weekender Bag: I’ve owned two of this brand’s diaper bags. I have one now for Kellen, and I love it! They just introduced their version of a weekender duffel bag. If the quality, function, and beauty of their diaper bags is any indication, this is bound to be hit too. Plus, if you sign up on their website you receive 15% off your first purchase!
  2. Loft Drop Pearl Earrings: I own these myself. They’re versatile and pretty, and they’ll make her feel special without breaking the bank. They’re already a great price, but they’re on further discount right now!
  3. Tocca Florence Perfume: I wear this … it’s my go to. I love everything about it. It’s feminine and floral, but not sappy sweet. Fragrance can be a tricky thing, with most women being fairly opinionated about what scents they do and do not like … but if your friend is open to trying something new … this is the one.
  4. Salt Scrub Body Polish: I bought this on a whim during a visit to World Market, and I’m in love. The scent is amazing, the scrub is infused with natural oils so it leaves your skin super soft and moisturized. Whenever I make a trip now, I stock up. And if your budget is an issue this year, it’s the most reasonably-priced gift in my guide.
  5. Aromatherapy Eye Pillow: Yup, I have one of these too! And I throw it on for about 5-10 minutes every night before bed. It’s cool, soothing, and it smells divine.
  6. Cashmere Hat: A luxurious find for a great price. It’s pretty, and super-soft, and it’ll keep her cozy all winter long.
  7. Serena & Lily Mohair Throw: Ok, this is your splurge item. It’s on my wish list for Christmas … I imagine it would feel like being wrapped up in a cloud. And right now, it’s 25% off, so if it’s your gift, go, now!
  8. Amaki Organic Essential Oil Blend: This is an #ifounditonamazon find! I love this oil. I put it on my face, my body, I mix it into my body lotion on days when I want a lighter feel. It smells amazing and it leaves your skin super-soft. It’s heavenly.
  9. Engravable Bracelet: Personalize it with her name or her kiddos names. It’s elegant and simple enough that she can wear it every day.
  10. Anthropologie Poncho: So pretty and versatile. Wear it to lounge around the house, over leggings on the weekend, or over a dress to brunch.
  11. Anthropologie Rancher Hat: Ranchers are the perfect hat … the brim is wide enough to provide coverage, but narrow enough that you can wear it anywhere (pool not required). I love neutral color, and the animal print is so subtle you can still wear this beauty with anything in your closet.
  12. Dried Hydrangea Bouquet: I have this gorgeous arrangement in a vase at bottom of our stairwell. The colors are simply beautiful. Soft pinks paired with a vibrant red. I love it. And since it’s dried, it’ll last a lot longer than fresh flowers!
  13. Cashmere Bateau Neck Pullover: Nothing says luxury like cashmere … if you’re bestie has been particularly good this year, surprise her with this beauty. She’ll never want to take it off.
  14. Daphne Journal: She’ll love the soft suede and sherpa combination. Encourage her to use it to write down all she’s grateful for each day … one day when she looks back on it, she’ll be so thankful she recorded those thoughts and memories.
  15. Nadia Embroidered Clutch: I purchased this for a wedding and received so many compliments! This is an outfit maker, sure to let her stand out from the crowd wherever she takes it.
  16. Anthropologie Capri Candle: If you’ve ever been to an Anthropologie store and smelled the heavenly scent that envelopes you the second you walk in, then you’ll get why this candle is a mainstay in my home. I have the candle, a reed diffuser, and the essential oil blend that I use with an essential oil diffuser. I don’t care who you are, when you smell this scent, you feel happy.
  17. Velvet Hair Clip Set: I bought this set of hair clips last Christmas season, and I’ve worn them all year long. I love them. The colors are rich, and they slide in nice and smooth and stay put all day. They’re another budget friendly option that she’ll cherish.
  18. Keds Wool & Shearling Sneakers: I just bought these for myself today. I needed a pair of sneakers for chasing babies and running errands. When I saw these cozy wool and shearling-lined ones, I was sold. And the fact that the Keds label takes me back to my childhood years is just a bonus.

Ok, so, I guarantee you there’s something here for that amazing woman you call your bestie. No matter your budget, no matter her tastes, I’ve got you covered.

As a heads up, I plan to post a series of gift guides for him, her, and the littles right after Thanksgiving, so stay tuned. Happy gifting!

A guide to a more simple, organized & fulfilling life, 1 image at a time. Wife, mama to 3 under 5, recovering attorney & lover of all things neutral.
Spring is finally here! I’m ready 💛 #goodbyew Spring is finally here! I’m ready 💛 #goodbyewinter
Looking for a quick, healthy, and satisfying break Looking for a quick, healthy, and satisfying breakfast? Only requirement: you must love dill!

Crack two eggs in a bowl, add a splash of milk, and whisk until fully combined.

Heat a mini skillet (I linked to a few of my favorites here) to medium heat and add a small dab of butter, coating the bottom of the pan.

Add the egg mixture to the skillet and cover. Reduce heat to medium-low, and let cook 2-3 minutes. Check that egg is cooked through (you may need to cover and let cook another minute or two). Gracefully (Julia Child-style), flip the egg over, then add shredded dill havarti, and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt (love @maldonsalt ). Cover and let cook about one minute more (just until cheese has melted).

Remove from pan to plate and sprinkle with fresh chopped dill.

Serve with toast or your favorite fruit! And if you want to add a little healthy fat to the mix, top with half an avocado.

Bon appétit! 💛

“Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatev “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
- Philippians 4:8

It can be incredibly difficult in our post-modern culture to fill our minds with beautiful, just, and honorable things. It seems as if we’re in a race to see who can best glorify the grotesque. Pop culture hasn’t met a boundary it isn’t willing to breach. It indulges and celebrates the darkest elements of humanity… music, movies, art, architecture … they don’t even attempt to stir your soul anymore, they’re focused on one thing, and one thing only: defiance. Defiance against all that is good, beautiful, and true.

One of the primary reasons I spend so much time creating beauty in our home is because I want it to be a refuge from the madness outside. I want my children to feel the goodness in this space, and to see evidence of God’s grace, creativity, and power. I want them to live everyday what the Apostle Paul commanded in his letter to the Philippians.

Your environment and your mind are your destiny, so make them beautiful. 💛 #beautymatters

Sunday morning breakfast was the yummiest homemade Sunday morning breakfast was the yummiest homemade popovers with honey butter and strawberry jam 🍓… grab a popover pan and whip these up (so easy)!

Preheat oven to 450F … briskly whisk 3 eggs & 1 1/2 cups whole milk in a large bowl. Then whisk in 1 1/2 cups flour & 1/2 tsp salt until all lumps are broken up and dissolved. Mix in 2 Tbsp melted butter & 1 tsp sugar.

Place the popover pan in the oven for 2 mins, then remove and fill each cup three-quarters full with batter. Bake for 20 mins, then reduce heat to 350F and bake for another 20 mins. Popovers should be golden brown on top. Remove from oven, turn them out of the pan (they’ll just pop right out!) and serve immediately!

Great with whipped honey butter or preserves. If you’re looking for a good jam, @stdalfourusa is our favorite … their strawberry rhubarb rivals my grandma’s recipe 💛 #crisplittlesundaybrunch
My first piece ✨ … I still need to receive pri My first piece ✨ … I still need to receive prints and launch my Etsy shop before I start selling, but this is your preview! Each print will come with a unique fabric matting, sourced from a couple of my favorite local fabric stores. I’ll have individual prints, and some sets as well. My original intention was to include birds, botanicals, and maybe some landscapes, but I suspect they’ll be some fun wanderlust and whimsy thrown in too! I’d love to hear your thoughts … what would you like to see hanging in your home? Happy weekend all! 💛 #wonderandwhimsy

Hello! Well, after a very long drawn out sick per Hello! Well, after a very long drawn out sick period (anyone else dealing with post-COVID monster viruses?!), we’re back … but with some changes. After giving it much thought, I’ve decided to give the blog a pause for awhile.

I’ll still share weekly looks, home inspo, and nuggets of wisdom, but it’ll all be here and on Pinterest.

One of the biggest challenges we all face, myself included, is how to manage our time, prioritize what we cherish most, and accomplish our goals. While I enjoy the blog, managing it has taken precious time away from other goals. If I’m honest, goals I’ve been too afraid to pursue. No more. I’ve been wanting to start an art business and write a book (or two) for awhile. It’s clear to me that the blog has become a pleasant distraction, and a place for me to hide.

Finding time for my husband, three small children, part-time homeschool, endless activities, a part-time law professorship, and creating a beautiful space to call home takes time and work. I don’t outsource much, I do it all.

And to all the other full-time mamas out there, while many people may look at your life and think, “what does she do all day?”, you know the truth. It’s work. It’s tough. I’ve done both — full-time as a lawyer and full-time as a mommy. Homemaking and mothering is so often unnoticed and taken for granted, but I truly believe it’s the most important work. And one day, the fruits of your labor will be realized.

In the meantime, be ruthless with your free time. Paint the picture. Start the business. Write the book. Time passes so quickly … make the most of it 💛
