HAPPY FRIDAY everyone !!
I hope you had an amazing week — we’ve been in Oregon relaxing with family, and preparing for a wedding tomorrow (one that was a long time coming!) 🙂
As summer’s end draws closer and closer (though you probably can’t tell with this crazy heat wave), I’ll be featuring my favorite pieces for the upcoming fall fashion season! I’m kicking things off with one of the most versatile pieces in my closet — a piece that every woman should own: the blazer. It’s a no-nonsense classic that puts a polished spin on your look, regardless of what you wear with it!
This one from J Crew, is one of my all-time favorites … it’s a few season’s old, but it will stand the test of time, and there are similar styles are all over the place right now. J Crew’s latest darling — the Regent blazer, here — is simply stunning.
And the best part about this piece, is its versatility. Here, I kept things simple and classic (no surprise, it’s my go-to look), but there are so many cool blazer styles out there, and endless ways to style them.
I love a good tweed blazer with riding boots, and there’s something undeniably cool about a girl in a blazer, hoodie, and sneakers.
You can also go for a more refined look, with a fluid longline blazer, wide-leg pants, and pointed toe flats — elegance and comfort all rolled into one gorgeous package.
I’m also really loving the super-feminine take on this piece — think candy colors with pretty details, like ruffling, or scalloped edges. Check out the blue beauty I found at Asos below, under SHOP the KEY PIECE.
As always, styling your blazer is all in the details. Pay attention to fit — unless it’s meant to be worn oversized, it should skim your curves and be sharp throughout the shoulders. There’s nothing worse than a sloppy fit when it comes to a blazer or suit jacket. To help accentuate your shape, choose a jacket with darts along the waistline, or light pleating along the backside. And look for simple ways to make it your own.
One of my favorite tricks for jackets (or cardigans) is to swap out the buttons! Yes! Oftentimes, unless you’re operating on a Daddy Warbucks-size budget, the buttons on blazers or cardigans can look very cheap or cheesy. But there’s an easy, economical way to fix that! Check out eBay, or Etsy for an endless variety of unique buttons. Then it’s simple — replace the standard buttons with the new, insanely cool buttons you found! The only potential hiccup here is the button size — just make sure the new buttons you purchase fit the button-holes on your jacket. This is one of the easiest ways to make a reasonably priced jacket look extremely high-end.
Another great trick to add some dimension and uniqueness to a jacket is to layer a silk scarf underneath along the neckline, so the contrasting colors and pattern of the scarf just peek out along the collar. I also like to play with interesting necklines, particularly with sweaters — an oversize chunky knit cowl-neck or turtleneck looks incredibly luxe under a fitted blazer. I think it’s the contrast — the coziness and texture of the sweater up against a structured jacket looks so sophisticated, yet effortless.
And finally, there’s the unexpected date night look — a buttoned-up blazer, and nothing else. Well, maybe a gorgeous lariat necklace (and some really good double-sided tape). I find this looks best with a relaxed silhouette — a slightly oversized jacket and a long(ish) skirt (midi-length, perhaps), or relaxed pants. You don’t want to reveal too much, and the low-cut neckline of the blazer with nothing underneath is plenty — you want to leave something to the imagination
I selected a few of my favorite finds below — check them out below under SHOP the KEY PIECE, and if you like my look here, you can find all the details below under SHOP the POST.
