Hi Everyone — I hope you’re enjoying the Labor Day weekend … live it up, only a few hours left of summer!
And then we turn to my favorite fashion season of the year — Fall! The cozy knits, layers, leather, suede, and rich colors just get me every year. And there are so many sales going on this weekend to help you get stocked up! So, I’ve compiled my top twelve pieces every working mom needs in her closet for a fabulous fall … here you go, and let me know if I missed anything!
Happy Labor Day … and Happy Shopping!
xoxo, K
OVER THE KNEE BOOTS
Flat, high-heeled, block heel, stiletto … whatever suits your fancy. But there’s something so effortless and cool about this boot. I splurged a bit, and purchased a pair of flat grey suede ones and a pair of black suede block heel ones. I couldn’t help myself! See a few of my pics below!
SLEEVELESS SUIT VEST
Ok, hear me out. A vest for colder weather? YES! How else are you supposed to wear those super-comfortable, oversized knit sweaters and a coat without feeling like a sausage all stuffed in its casing??? Half the fun of cooler weather is in getting to wear layers! A sleeveless vest is an easy way to add layers and polish to your look. I just purchased this one, and I am currently coveting this one (a splurge, that’s currently a steal on sale)! Here are a few of my favorites:
OVERSIZE KNIT SWEATER
What says cool, crisp fall weather better than a big cozy knit? Do you have visions of fireplaces, cocoa, and warm cozy blankets dancing around in your head yet? Check out the beauties below, and I promise you will!
SNEAKERS
Ok, year round, these are a must for working moms. On your off days, you need to give your poor feet a break from those heels! And, chances are your weekends are full of errands, chasing your little one around the park, and just generally running around like a crazy woman (kidding . . . kind of). Translation: you need comfy shoes. For fall, I’m not a stickler about color — as you’ll see in my upcoming Whites After Labor Day series, there are no colors that are off limits — what matters is the material and texture. So, for sneakers, I’d skip the canvas, or any other “summer-y” type fabric, and go for suede or leather. The rest of the details are up to you — check out my picks below!
POWER SUIT
This is really a year-round staple, but with each new season (fall or spring), I like to take a survey of my closet and replace pieces that are starting to look a little shabby — AND the suiting options are just gorgeous this time of year! It seems like during the fall months, there’s always extra details that are lacking throughout the rest of the year — rich colors (wine, camel, olive), houndstooth, plaid, pleating, etc. I never thought buying a suit could be so fun!
SLEEVELESS SHIFT DRESS
This is another fantastic incredibly versatile layering piece that will take you from weekend errands, to brunch, to the office. On the weekends, add sneakers a ball cap, and a jean jacket. For brunch, some suede booties, and a boyfriend cardigan. And at the office, heels and a blazer. AND …. your done!
LONGLINE CARDIGAN
Comfy, cozy, layered over your PJs at home to lounge around, over a tee and jeans, or over a dress to Sunday brunch . . . this piece is a fall closet staple. See my picks below.
BRETON STRIPED TEE
Classic, sophisticated, polished. Add jeans and flats and you still look put together — such is the power of this quintessentially French power piece. I also love to layer this under a cardigan, or under a sleeveless dress. You can never go wrong with a classic striped tee.
NUETRAL CONVERTIBLE HANDBAG TO CROSS-BODY
If you’re going to invest in a nice bag you want it to do it all, right!? It needs to be the perfect mid-size with a top handle for work days — polished and professional . . . check! But on the weekends, you want to be able to clip on a shoulder strap, and voila … a hands-free cross-body (absolute necessity for mommy’s juggling babies, groceries, coffee, cell phones, etc.) Check out these gorgeous options:
“UPDATED” BASEBALL CAP
I know, you love your beat up old Yankees cap, (or in my case, Cubs hat!). But sometimes you want to elevate the casual look just a bit. I’ll never completely give up the baseball cap — it’s a timeless, American classic. BUT, you can add a little bit of luxe to the look — grab a suede, satin, or wool one! It’s still laid back casual, but it ups the sophistication factor by 10! See:
SILK BLOUSE
Another work staple, but again, in the fall the color and pattern options are just to die for! Go for a rich stripe, or dark floral. Simply stunning. On it’s own with trousers or a pencil skirt to work, layered underneath a sleeveless sheath (so chic), or with boyfriend jeans on the weekend. It will take you anywhere, with class and elegance. My picks:
JEANS THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY (every time you put them on)
You know what I’m talking about — you want a pair of jeans that fit you so well, you just feel happy when you put them on (even on “fat” days). This is a truly individual thing . . . as every woman’s body is different. It’s all about trial and error here — just try as many pairs as you can, and don’t dismiss anything without trying it on first, you might be surprised by what looks and feels fantastic, and what doesn’t! Here are a variety of styles that I’m loving this season:
